Botox

What is it?

Botulinum Toxin is a bacteria naturally found in the soil, the bacteria goes through a medical process to purify it for medical use.

What is it used to treat?

Botox is commonly used to treat; frown lines [between the eyebrows], crows feet  [the area around the eyes] and forehead lines. It has been used for many years in much larger doses, in general medicine for the treatment of muscular problems such as strokes and cerebral palsy.

How does it work?

When small doses of Botox are injected into the facial muscles it temporarily relaxes the muscle stopping it from contracting which helps to soften fine lines and wrinkles. Regular treatment will help to prevent these lines becoming deeper the future.

How is it performed?

Botox is injected via a very fine needle into the specific facial muscles the injections are virtually painless so no anaesthetic is required.

How long will it last?

Botox will remain working in the muscles for up to 3 months although this can vary. To make sure you get the best result we like to see you for a review 2 weeks after your treatment to ensure you are getting the maximum result.

What are the risks?

Botox has been used for over 30 years with no long term side effects and when performed by an experienced practitioner the risk of side effects is very low. The main reported side effects are over relaxation of the muscles leading to facial drooping for example; eyebrows or eyelid.

Are there any special pre-cautions before undergoing the treatment?

It is not often patients get a bruise from this sort of treatment but the risk can be minimised by observing some simple standard pre-cautions, such as limiting alcohol the evening before treatment, not taking analgesics containing aspirin one day before treatment and if you are prone to bruising you may benefit from taking Arnica tablets for one week prior to treatment.
