Restylane Dermal Fillers

What is it?

Restylane is a clear gel made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in the skin, which is responsible for hydrating and adding volume to the skin’s structure.

What is it used to treat?

Restylane is used to soften lines on the face; this could be from the nose to the corner of the mouth, along the lip border to stop lipstick bleeding or for fine lines on the cheeks. It can also be used after Botox on any remaining frown lines, on the top of hands and on the décolleté to rejuvenate thin sun damaged skin or even to sculpt cheek bones.

How does it work?

When hyaluronic acid is injected into the skin it lifts fine lines and wrinkles, adds volume where it has been lost and re-hydrates the skins tissue. In some areas several treatments may be recommended to achieve the best result.

How is it performed?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic [a cream and/or dental block depending on the area to be treated]. Restylane is introduced into the skin via a sequence of small injections along the surface of the line or wrinkle. The area is then massaged with Aloe Vera Gel to ensure a smooth surface.

How long will it last?

Restylane will remain in the skin for approximately 6-9 months. Restylane has the great advantage of slowly being broken down by the body. This is very important as it allows your treatment to be adapted at every stage of the ageing process.

What are the risks?

Obviously, no treatment can be guaranteed to present ‘no risk’, however Restylane has a proven safety record, having been used to treat over four million

patients, and has satisfied the requirements of the FDA [The American drug regulatory authority].

Are there any special pre-cautions before undergoing the treatment?

It is not often patients get a bruise from this sort of treatment but the risk can be minimised by observing some simple standard pre-cautions, such as limiting alcohol the evening before treatment, not taking analgesics containing aspirin for one week before treatment and if you are prone to bruising you may benefit from taking Arnica tablets for one week prior to treatment.

Aftercare

Massaging the area may be recommended by the treating physician.

Please be aware
You may experience a small degree of ‘redness’ in the area treated. This will soon subside.
However, if the lips are being treated you will have a noticeable degree of swelling and a loss of sensation [due to the dental block anaesthesia] for some hours after treatment.

You may wish to bear this in mind when planning your diary for the day of the treatment.
