Skin Resurfacing and Chemical Peels
What are they?
Our professional skin resurfacing treatments and peels contain acids naturally derived from sour milk, sugar cane and winter green. We use acids in varying strengths to suit all skin types and conditions from sensitive to acneic and young to more mature skin.
What are they used to treat?
By combining the acids of glycolic, lactic and salicylic your face can be treated holistically for various skin conditions. Peels and resurfacing treatments are used to deeply exfoliate all layers of the skin, refine the appearance of wrinkles, even skin tone and lighten pigmentation. They also stimulate collagen production, reduce pore size and improve the hydration of the skin.
Our skin is designed to naturally exfoliate every 28 days. With age this process slows down and our skin cells become lazy. To keep skin looking healthy and youthful it is important to re-stimulate the skin. Optimum, healthy skin is achieved when the outer layer of your skin which you can physically touch is relatively thin, comprising of smoother, softer, living cells and the inner layer which is made up of three quarters collagen is plump and thick.
How do they work?
Once the peel is applied to the face it effectively removes the dead cells from the surface of the skin and penetrates deep into the layers of skin where hair follicles, sebaceous glands and collagen are present.
How is it performed?
On the day of treatment the practitioner prepares the skin by cleansing before applying the chosen peel with a fan brush. This is then left on the skin for approx 10 minutes after which the peel is removed and the skin is then soothed. Professional products are applied to the skin and aftercare advice will be given.
If the skin is not correctly cared for following a chemical peel there is a risk that problems such as scarring can occur.
How long will it last?
Once you have completed your course of treatments a monthly maintenance programme will be designed for you to ensure the results last for many months. Using the recommended homecare products will prolong and enhance the results of any professional treatment.
What are the risks?
No treatment can be guaranteed to present ‘no risk’, however we rarely see any problems following our peels and a thorough analysis of the skin is always performed by our aesthetic nurse or senior therapist. In order to avoid any unwanted side effects, such as scarring or pigmentation, it is important you follow the pre-treatment programme and aftercare.
Are there any special pre-cautions before undergoing the treatment?
Prior to a peel you will be expected to prepare your skin by using the recommended homecare products for two weeks. This will ensure that your skin responds most effectively and your recovery time is minimal.
Aftercare
Please be aware;
You may experience a small degree of ‘redness’ in the area treated.
Your skin will start to peel naturally and you must not attempt to peel off any loose skin. Any skin you attempt to pick off may go onto scar.
You must not expose your skin to sun or sun bed’s and the recommended UVA and UVB sunscreen must be worn for at least 6 months after a peel to avoid pigmentation.
Home care products will be recommended by your nurse or therapist.
You may wish to bare these points in mind when planning your diary for the week of the treatment.
Cost
This will depend on whether your Practitioner recommends a course of peels or a single treatment.
