What is it / What is it used to treat?
Lasers are a modern and effective way of reducing hair growth in brown or black hair with long lasting results.
How does it work?
A small laser light source is directed at the skin’s surface where the light is then absorbed by the melanin in the actively growing hairs.
When the hair absorbs the light it converts the light into heat therefore reducing the follicle’s ability to produce the hair. The treated hairs can then take up to 10 days to shed sometimes this can appear to look like rapid growth.
The treatment is repeated 4-6 weeks later continuing until the necessary 6-8 treatment course is completed. The number of treatments required and the results achieved can vary depending on factors such as hormones or hair density. The treatment does not work on blond or red hair due to the lack of melanin in the hair.
How is it performed?
Your trained technician will perform a pre-treatment skin typing analysis at your consultation visit. If the outcome of the skin type analysis is satisfactory, you will be able to commence your treatment at the same visit.
However, if the outcome of the skin typing analysis raises concerns or places you in a ‘higher-risk’ patient category, your technician will perform a ‘patch test’ to check your tolerance of the laser therapy and you will be requested to delay commencing your treatment until the outcome of the ‘patch test’ can be assessed.
The treatment itself is relatively painless, but sensitive areas can be treated with an anaesthetic cream first. Your technician will keep you fully informed of what is happening throughout the treatment.
Do I need to take any precautions before having the treatment?
You must avoid any kind of tanning for at least 4 weeks prior to the procedure including; sunbathing, tanning booths and applying fake tan.
You must avoid any form of depilation for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment.
Treatments to avoid during this period include; waxing, sugaring, threading, tweezing, depilatory creams, electrolysis or bleaching.
The only form of depilation that can be used during a course of treatment is shaving. This may make the hairs feel slightly coarser and look denser but shaving cannot increase growth or density despite what your mother may say!
Hair must be shaved the day before your treatment except on the initial consultation visit.
Avoid glycolic based products for one week prior to treatment and please inform us if you are having a chemical peel.
Tell your technician if you have taken Roaccutane (acne drug) in the last 6 month’s or if you are planning to take it.
Always inform your technician if you have any change in medication during your course of treatment.
Aftercare
It is very important that the area treated is protected from sun exposure for at least 4 weeks following treatment.
You may experience some redness of the skin although this will settle within a few hours of the treatment or by the next day. The procedure is virtually pain free however any mild discomfort or heat sensation in the area can be alleviated by regular application of ice packs and Aloe Vera gel.
Sun protection must be worn at all times, please ensure yours is at least SPF 20 UVA & UVB. If in doubt ask your technician or purchase one of ours.
Avoid heat treatments for 48 hours post treatment such as sauna, steam and hot baths.
Avoid glycolic based products for 1 week and again inform your technician if you decide to have a chemical peel.
Cost
Laser Hair Removal is priced by ‘timed’ sessions. This is due to the varied location and size of the body areas that can be treated. Your technician will be able to advice you at your consultation visit, the likely number of sessions required to achieve your desired outcome.
