Laser Pigmentation Reduction

What is it / What is it used to treat?

Lasers are an effective way of reducing the visible signs of aging and sun damage such as age spots or pigmentation changes.

How does it work?

A small laser light source is directed at the pigmentation on the skins surface. The laser’s light is absorbed by the ‘darker’ areas of the skin [pigmentation changes], causing the area to darken further before peeling.

How is it performed?

Your trained technician will perform a pre-treatment skin typing analysis at your consultation visit.  If the outcome of the skin type analysis is satisfactory, you will be able to commence your treatment at the same visit.

However, if the outcome of the skin typing analysis raises concerns or places you in a ‘higher-risk’ patient category, your technician will perform a ‘spot test’ to check your tolerance of the laser therapy and you will be requested to delay commencing your treatment until the outcome of the ‘spot test’ can be assessed.

The treatment itself is relatively painless and your technician will keep you fully informed of what is happening throughout the treatment.

Do I need to take any precautions before having the treatment?

You must avoid any kind of tanning for at least four weeks before the procedure. This includes sunbathing, tanning booths, applying fake tan.

Aftercare

It is very important that the area treated is protected and not exposed to direct sun for at least four weeks following treatment.

After treatment the treated areas will appear darker than before, over the next 10 days it may form a crust and it will peel away.
Do not attempt to pick or peel the area as this could cause scarring.
You must protect the area every day for the rest of your life with the recommended sunscreen to prevent it from returning or new pigmentation forming.
It is very rare to experience post treatment discomfort, however any post treatment heat sensation can be alleviated by regular application of cold packs and Aloe Vera gel.

Cost

Laser pigmentation reduction is priced by ‘timed’ sessions. This is due to the varied location and amount of pigmentation being treated. Your technician will be able to advice you at your consultation visit, the likely number of sessions required to achieve your desired outcome.
