Sclerotherapy for Veins
What is it?
Sclerotherapy is a treatment used to reduce unwanted thread veins on the legs by injecting a chemical [sclerosant] called Sclerovein into the vein.
What is it used to treat?
Sclerotherapy is used mainly in the legs to reduce large areas of big thread veins.
How does it work?
When a vein is injected the walls of the vein become irritated and stick together, the sealed vein is then disposed of naturally by the body.
How is it performed?
This procedure is performed without any anaesthetic because it is relatively painless [stinging sensation like a small bite]. The Physician uses tiny injections into each of the veins to flush the sclerosant through, as the sclerosant travels down the chosen vein it seals it off. Generally the treatment takes 30 minutes to perform.
How long will it last?
Thread veins usually need two or three treatments but once they have been successfully removed the results are permanent. However thread veins are a progressive condition, so further treatments may be required to treat new veins which appear.
What are the risks?
The sclerosant used to treat thread veins has been used for many years and there are minimal risks when treated by trained practitioners.
Are there any special pre-cautions before undergoing the treatment?
Occasionally patients get a bruise from this treatment but the risk can be minimised by observing some simple standard pre-cautions such as;
Limiting alcohol the evening before treatment.
Not taking analgesics containing aspirin for 1 week before treatment.
If you are prone to bruising you may benefit from taking Arnica tablets for 1 week prior to treatment.
