Unwanted Pigmentation

The skin is a complex structure consisting of different layers of cells and supporting materials, each having specific roles in maintaining the skin’s function. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin and is where the pigemented cells, know as melanocytes, are found.  These cells produce the dark skin pigment called melanin.

In pale skin types unwanted and patchy melanin production is often a result of prolonged sun exposure, acne and acne scarring, or dermatitis and in women specifically, can result from stimulation by the female sex hormones in a condition called chloasma.

The most important step in treatment is the use of a good quality, high factor sunscreen to prevent stimulation of the melanocytes, thus reducing the production of melanin.  Often a suitable regime will significantly improve pigmentation.  If this is not the case then chemical peels, laser rejuvenation and medical microdermabrasion can all be used to treat the condition.
